Lead Electrical Engineer
Job OverviewThe Lead Electrical Engineer will guide a technical team to ensure high-quality project deliverables are completed within established timelines while fostering strong client relationships. This role involves overseeing both the proposal and execution phases of projects, including resource management, technical review, and ensuring alignment with engineering principles, applicable codes, and corporate standards. The Lead Electrical Engineer will also mentor and collaborate with team members to share knowledge and enhance overall technical expertise.
Responsibilities:- Project Leadership & Execution:
- Lead and oversee the technical team to deliver quality project outcomes on time and within scope.
- Actively engage with clients to maintain and strengthen relationships, ensuring their requirements are met.
- Develop schedules, resource plans, and help ensure that required resources are identified and allocated appropriately once projects are awarded.
- Delegate responsibilities to team members, supervise their work, and ensure deliverables are produced according to project timelines and specifications.
- Participate in the proposal phase, including scope definition, man-hour estimation, deliverable planning, scheduling, and resource planning.
- Monitor the project’s execution, ensuring progress aligns with plans, reporting regularly on status and addressing any challenges or delays.
- Ensure that the project meets the necessary technical, budgetary, and schedule requirements while adhering to company standards.
- Act as the reviewer for technical documentation, ensuring high-quality and accurate engineering outputs.
- Technical Oversight & Guidance:
- Provide technical leadership, ensuring sound engineering principles are applied and that all work aligns with applicable codes, standards, and corporate objectives.
- Review and approve key deliverables, including design documents, drawings, and technical specifications.
- Support the team with complex technical issues and offer solutions to challenging design problems.
- Conduct "cold-eye" reviews and provide final sign-off on project deliverables.
- Oversee and mentor engineers and designers within the team, ensuring the technical integrity of their work and providing constructive feedback.
- Identify opportunities for process improvements and recommend updates to design procedures.
- Project Documentation & Compliance:
- Create and maintain the Discipline Quality Plan (DQP) to ensure that project deliverables are defined, with clear roles for responsibility, approval, and consultation.
- Coordinate document issuance, ensuring the timely review and distribution of project documents (e.g., IDRs, IFRs, IFCs).
- Track and report on project deliverable progress through project management tools (e.g., Time-Track).
- Assist with project close-out activities, preparing final reports and ensuring all documentation is submitted to the Technical Document Control (TDC) team for filing.
- Change Management & Scope Control:
- Monitor project scope, schedule, and budget, ensuring any changes are appropriately managed and communicated.
- Initiate and process Key Decision Records (KDRs) for design or technical changes, and Engineering Work Requests (EWRs) for scope or budget adjustments.
- Support the Project Manager with any necessary changes to the project’s cost, scope, or schedule.
- Prepare and review MOCs (Management of Change) when approved hours are exceeded, identifying issues and proposing corrective actions.
Keys for Success:- Strong understanding of engineering codes, standards, and industry best practices.
- Proven experience managing and mentoring engineering teams, including providing technical guidance and support.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact effectively with clients, internal teams, and external stakeholders.
- Strong organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously.
Required:- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
- Professional Engineering (P.Eng.) designation is required.
- 5+ years of practical experience.
- Design: Diploma from a recognized 2-year Technology Program; equivalent combination of education, training, and experience preferred.
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in electrical engineering, with at least 5 years in a leadership or supervisory role within an EPCM environment.
- Experience with project management tools and software (e.g., Time-Track, MS Project, etc.).
